Environmentalist protest lack of climate plans in Budapest

Environmental group Levegő Munkacsoport objects to the situation that no climate plans are required for Budapest construction projects and that the city has no climate map, though they have been compulsory in Germany for decades. "Investors look for short-term investment returns but the buildings constructed remain here for a hundred years and impact on residents," Levegő commented.

Negative examples are the Westend shopping mall at Nyugati station, which killed off shops along the capital's Nagykörút and forced owners to move into the mall and take on high rents. Building the two office buildings at Árpád híd also increased traffic there, which was already the heaviest in town.

Extensive building on the nearby Hajógyári island has had similar consequences though this has provided revenues for local government, the group reasoned.
