Engery concerns mount
Hungary consumed 74.5 million m3 of natural gas on Sunday and about 86 million m3 on Monday, close to the system's maximum capacity of 87.5 million m3, MOL gas transport subsidiary Földgázszállító Rt. announced. Consumption is expected to remain under the maximum capacity, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said after a meeting of the energy security committee.
Any restrictions that might be imposed would affect industrial consumers, but not households. If large consumers switch from natural gas to oil, then gas consumption drops by 5-9 million m3 daily.
The government is negotiating with power plants Dunamenti Erőmű, Csepeli Erőmű and Budapesti Erőmű, asking them to voluntarily switch from gas to oil. The 34 largest industrial consumers contractually obliged to make such a switch have already done so. The price difference between oil and gas will be covered by the state electricity works MVM.
