Police took 5,545 driver's licenses from drunk drivers in spot checks from May to September because of the "zero tolerance" policy against drunk drivers.

The number of accidents caused by drunk driving was down 27% in the first eight months of the year, National Police chief József Bencze announced.

Under the policy of "zero tolerance" driver's licenses are revoked with immediate effect when breathalysers show even the lowest level of alcohol consumed. Since the zero tolerance policy began in May, drivers have been fined a total of Ft 4.8 billion, of which Ft 1.3 billion has been paid.
