After a delay of several months, drilling work on Budapest's fourth metro line will start in April, said mayor Gábor Demszky at a press conference on Tuesday, where he discussed this year's Ft 500 billion (nearly €2 billion) budget.

Demszky has appointed "metro commissioner" László Becker to create a plan of action by the end of January. Becker has experience dealing with EU funding at the ministry of economy.

Assistant mayor Miklós Hagyó, speaking of developments planned for this year, said that the reconstruction of Szabadság híd will start at the same time as construction of stations on the M4 line in Pest in August. The reconstruction of the M2 metro line will continue, and 156 kilometers of roads will be repaired. As part of road reconstruction work, 15 kilometers will be added to the 160-kilometers of cycle paths around the city. Meanwhile, the last Combino tram will arrive on the Nagykörút by May, the modernization of the Szabó Ervin tér traffic control center will be started and a six-kilometer noise buffer wall will be constructed at the stretch of M3 leading to the city with a €4 million of EU support. There are plans to create a noise map of Budapest before the end of the year and a related action plan can be given the go-ahead next year.
