District VI residents protest underground parking plan

Residents of Nagymező utca (District VI) will hold a protest against the construction of a 22-meter-deep garage under their street at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 25 on the downtown street between Király utca and Andrássy út. According to gondola.hu, the local government has given the project the go-ahead without informing them orf the plans.

Several hundred residents have created the Union for Nagymező utca Interest Protection Association (Összefogás a Nagymező Utcáért Érdekvédő Egyesület), which was joined by local shop owners and companies located in the street.

The residents' complain is that they have not been informed about the plans, and that, if they they had, they would not have agreed to them. The local government sent a note of the plans only to the buildings' resident representatives, rather than individual tenants, which controvenes property laws. The representatives in most buildings did not forward the letter to residents, and some of them claim not to have even received the notification themselves.

Residents have asked environmental protection organizations Levegő Munkacsoport and Védegylet to help their cause. They do not want the famous trees of the street to be felled and are worried about heightened traffic, increased pollution and the church on the corner of Nagymező and Király utcas.
