Residents of flood-hit Felsőzsolca, Borsod county staged a demonstration outside the town hall yesterday. Police drove the angry protestors out from the public building.

Local councillor Gyula Nádi took a petition collected by local residents demanding answers on who had erred over the town's flood protection and what its leadership will do to prevent such occurrences in future. They also demanded that the town's leadership resign.

The flood hit the town, which has 8,000 residents, on June 6. It inundated 80% of Felsőzsolca's 2,200 houses, 170 of which collapsed. Damage exceeded Ft 2 billion.

Mayor Attila Fehér said the local population is constantly being kept fully abreast about donations. If he and the local council resigned they would lose the Ft 1.7 billion government subsidy, he added.
