Over half a million Hungarian diabetics will be affected by the Ft 300 "box fee" (dobozdíj) to be introduced next Moday, reports hirszerzo.hu. Insulin has been provided to diabetics in Hungary free of charge since 1925.

According to Dr. József Fövenyi of the Péterfy Sándor utcai Hospital in Budapest, the Ft 300 fee is not what is going to cause a financial burden to patients, but rather the cost of additional drugs to treat the side effects of diabetes. These include kidney and eye problems and cardiovascular diseases. Some patients are forced to take 10 to 15 different kinds of medications in addition to insulin.

Compared to other EU countries, the circumstances of diabetics in Hungary are good, said János Kincses, the president of the National Alliance of Hungarian Diabetics (Magyar Cukorbetegek Országos Szövetsége).

He added that diabetics patients will be excluded from having to pay the visitation fees to be introduced in February.
