Demos begin again outside Hungarian PM's house
Some 1,000 "Kossuth tér" demonstrators, marched to Rózsadomb in Buda on Saturday to stage a protest at the end of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány's street.
Protesters brandished flags with Árpád stripes and placards featuring the national colours while shouting slogans against both the prime minister - just 50 metres from his private residence - and the cabinet. Police sealed off the street with metal barriers, but the mob remained nearby to chant: "Wake up, slaves," "Kossuth tér will return," and "Beat it Gyurcsány, and take your cronies with you."
The crowd also demanded Gyurcsány's immediate imprisonment and spoke of an illegitimate power that serves foreign interests. They will now proceed to the house of a governing politician each week to protest the recent austerity measures, it was announced.
According to original plans another procession was scheduled to leave from Vértanúk tere, but police eventually banned the downtown demonstration entitled "Disobedience Day" on the grounds that traffic must not be obstructed. A smaller group were still allowed to march to Deák tér, however.
Single-lane closures and protests to slow down car traffic were staged against the government in nearly all the Hungarian counties on Saturday. They were organised by the movement calling itself Alliance for a True Nation, which was founded on December 18. About 2,000 demonstrators called on those "responsible for the moral and economic crisis that has developed in Hungarian society and the economy" to leave public life.
