Defence Minister backtracks on Afghan assasination attempt
Defence Minister Imre Szekeres corrected a weekend report that assassins tried to kill Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz during her visit to Afghanistan. The initial report was a false alarm, he said.
Foreign Ministry spokesman György Odze said on Saturday that there had been an attempt to assassinate Göncz. However, Szekeres said Hungarian soldiers and NATO personnel examined the location where an explosive device had allegedly been planted, but found nothing. Odze said the commander of the NATO reconstruction team in northern Baghlan Province had received warning on Thursday that an attack was being planned.
Szekeres stressed that he will take every measure to avoid such misunderstandings in future.
