Debrecen to sell its airport to fund development of the city
Debrecen is selling its airport in order to boost the development of the city, mayor Lajos Kósa announced.
Ten companies are interested, including investors from Austria, China, Germany, Russia, Spain and the UK, Kósa said. Only companies operating passenger airlines will be eligible, he added, in order to guarantee that the airport continues to function. In addition, the buyer should employ only Debrecen residents.
Debrecen invested Ft 4 billion in the airport between 2001 and 2007 and expects to sell it for Ft 10 billion. Revenues will be spent on development of the city.
Bids will be formally invited in October and a contract of sale could be signed before the end of the year, Kósa said.
