Cuban refugees to arrive in Hungary today
A group of Cuban refugees who have been under guard at the United States Naval base in Guantánamo are expected to arrive in Hungary today, writes gondola.hu, based on a report in daily Népszabadság.
Foreign Ministry State Secretary Márta Fekszi Horváthné announced in August that Hungary, by request of the United States, will provide political asylum to 29 Cuban refugees. According to Horváthné, expenses will be covered by the US for one year, after which the Hungarian Baptist Aid (Baptista Szeretetszolgálat) will provide them with accommodation and meals.
The refugees were captured by the US Coast Guard in waters between Cuba and Florida. According to the 1995 US-Cuba joint statement on migration, they are illegal immigrants who are not entitled to a settlement permit in the US.
After the announcement in August, the Cuban foreign ministry denounced Hungary as a "lackey" of the United States.
