A total of 44 apartments in a ten-floor panelház (ready-built, Socialist-style housing block) burned out or were flooded during extinguishing a fire in Debrecen on Monday, reports fn.hu.

The fire was started by a resident on the first floor, who left cooking food unattended. Fourteen people were injured, and six needed to be taken to the hospital, most of them with smoke poisoning. Their condition is satisfactory.

Residents had to be evacuated from 132 apartments. Those 44 families who could not return to their homes are staying with relatives or friends. The Charity Service of the Reformed Church has offered Ft 1 million (€3,900) as a quick aid. The local government has received offers of furniture and clothes, and the Debrecen refugee camp has said that it can accommodate 12 families if needed.
