Contraband cigarettes worth more than 150 million forints (EUR 543,000) were seized from a Polish lorry at the Artand border crossing with Romania early on Sunday, a customs spokesman said.

The lorry was on its way from Romania to Poland and it was supposed to transport porcelain products. However, a detailed inspection with X-ray equipment revealed that it was mostly loaded with cigarettes and only 2 of the 32 platforms were loaded with chinaware.

A total of 265,000 boxes of cigarettes with Ukrainian excise stickers were found.

A fine exceeding 170 million forints is expected to be levied for excise violation.
