Christmas trees to be turned into electricity in Budapest
Budapest Public Maintenance Services (FKF Zrt) is collecting thrown out Christmas trees and transferring them to a waste incinerator where they will be turned into electricity, reports Népszabadság.
People begin to throw Christmas trees out this week, and the FKF are transferring them by the usual garbage trucks and special trucks which can break even the giant trees. In Budapest, 500,000 to 600,000 trees are expected to be transported, of which the last ones will be thrown out only in April.
According to the FKF, people are becoming more and more disciplined in disposing of their Christmas trees. Trees falling out of windows are becoming a rarity, and people prefer to put them next to garbage bins. The few trees, however, which are still thrown out of windows often scratch cars. A lot of trees end up in playgrounds, too.
Unlike some other cities, in Budapest, Christmas trees are not composted because of the non-organic materials such as candy wrappers and wires people often forget to remove from them. The trees transferred by the FKF will be turned into electricity and heating for the Káposztásmegyer area.
