A young Carpathian Lynx (Lynx lynx carpathica) is wandering loose in Szeged, reports local news portal delmagyar.hu. The animal escaped from the zoo Saturday morning, after unidentified perpetrators vandalized the fence. Experts say the large cat is not dangerous to humans.

The one-year-old male lynx arrived in Szeged from Dortmund last year. It escaped through a 15- to 20-centimeter hole on the fence on October 18. An attendant saw the animal run away, but choose to prevent its sibling from escaping rather than pursuing it.

Traps filled with food have been placed around the 54-hectare forested area of the zoo, but director Róbert Veprik hopes the young lynx will return on its own. It is known that its father once escaped the Dortmund Zoo by jumping over a fence and returned after a few months. The director added that its sibling is also calling after the escaped lnyx.
