Cable TV fees to rise, internet to become cheaper in 2007
Cabel TV fees will rise by 6 to 10% in Hungary in 2007, while the price of internet bandwidth will decline, writes origo.hu. Experts say that providers are preparing for IP TV services by increasing bandwidth.
László Szűcs, press relations director of UPC Magyarország, said the trend that started in recent years will continue, and internet and phone fees will decrease due to heightened competition. As an example, he pointed out that the price of a certain quality internet service is half or one third of that five years ago, or a subscriber can receive a speed five times that of earlier for the same price. The company will raise cable TV fees by an average of 10% this year. UPC has 730,000 cable TV, 180,000 internet, 170,000 UPC Direct and more than 50,000 phone subscribers.
T-Kábel, which has 310,000 subscribers, will raise cable TV fees by 6%, while it will not change the prices of its phone and internet services.
Géza Szathmáry, CEO of GTS Datanet, said that bandwith grew considerably last year and will continue to grow in 2007, which shows that providers are preparing for IP TV services.
