The border guards will be merged into the police force from early next year, the cabinet decided on Wednesday. Prime Minister's Office state secretary Zoltán J. Gál said that after the merger the police, crime-fighting, public security, traffic and border authorities will have a combined force of 44-45,000.

Gál also said the cabinet will decide on modifying the system of fees for medical visits next week. The coalition parties disagree on extending the sphere of those exempt from fees, Népszabadság reports, as the Socialists want to exempt police from the payments, while the Free Democrats do not.

The cabinet also decided to introduce a plan from next year aimed at helping disabled people to return to the labour market. Social Affairs Minister Péter Kiss said the rehabilitation period will last three years at most. The rehabilitation allowance will equal the disability pension of those taking part in the programme, Ft 53-55,000 a month, on average.
