Bust of former PM stolen from Budapest's District XV
Unidentified perpetrators stole a bronze bust of József Antall, Hungary's first prime minister after the political changes of 1990, from Pestújhelyi tér, a square in Budapest's District XV (Pestújhely) on the weekend, reports MTI.
District Mayor László Hajdu (MSZP) said that the motive for the theft was probably collecting metal. The bust, made by the sculptor Károly Kirchmayer and erected in December 2003, was probably removed from its artificial stone pedestal with the help of a large hammer.
Hajdu, a former student of Antall, added that police have found no fingerprints at the scene.
Antall was Hungary's prime minister from 1989 until his death in 1993. He was born and raised in Pestújhely, which was founded by his ancestors.
