Buda's embankment roads to be closed this summer

Two of Budapest's main road arteries, the lower and upper embankments on the Buda side of the Danube river, will be closed for nearly two months this summer due to construction works, writes gazdasagiradio.hu, based on a report by MTI. Both embankments will be closed between June 16 and August 20 due to construction of the Gellért tér station of the new subway line, Metro 4.

The construction of the metro station will be linked to that of the Buda main sewer in order to meet deadlines and so that traffic will be obstructed for a shorter period of time, City Hall Press Chief Dorottya Czuk said.

According to MTI, this plan was discussed with Deputy Mayor Miklós Hagyó (MSZP) on Tuesday. In order to ensure two-way traffic and public transportation on Budafoki út, temporary lanes would be created on Gellért tér by removing most of the square's ornamental covering. These lanes would be used until the Gellért tér station and its surface-level establishments are completed.

The construction of the underground part of the station was originally scheduled to have started after May 9, 2009, when work on the Buda main sewer would have been finished.

Hagyó said that moving the schedule one year earlier also ensures that the construction of the subway station does not "get on a critical path," and the final deadline of the Metro 4 construction can be met.
