Budapest's "Rock Hospital" opens new permanent exhibitions
Part of the cave system under the Castle Hill was turned into a bomb-proof hospital and shelter during the Second World War.
Budapest's unique Rock Hospital museum has opened three new permanent exhibitions, index.hu reports.
The museum was established inside a former secret military underground hospital located under the Castle Hill. It opened to visitors three years ago.
One of the museum's new attractions is a memorial room for Friedrich Born, who was representative of the International Red Cross in Budapest from May 1944. He had an important role in protecting Jewish hospitals, foster homes and the rock hospital itself during the rule of the Hungarian Nazi party, the Arrow Crossists. He saved over 15,000 Hungarian Jews from being transported to death camps. His office operated inside the hospital until February 1945.
Also new at the museum is a technical history exhibition focused on the designers and constructors who turned the cave system into a bomb-proof hospital.
The third new exhibition presents the former air raid center of the Castle Hill, which had an important rule during the 1944 siege of Budapest, having controlled all air raid sirens of the city.
