Budapest's Andrássy út to be sealed on October 22

The cabinet is gearing up to mark the upcoming anniversary of the breakout of the 1956 Uprising at a "closed" commemoration, Népszabadság writes, as Andrássy út and streets around the Opera House will be sealed off to traffic on October 22 ahead of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány's speech there that night.

Local residents may only return home on foot with police accompaniment between 2 p.m. and the late evening.

The nation's senior politicians will be present on the morning of October 23 when the national flag is hoisted on Kossuth tér, after which they will proceed to the nearby statue of martyred prime minister Imre Nagy to pay tribute in a silent remembrance. They will then drive off to lay wreaths at the memorial of the revolution on 56-osok tere. The series of remembrances is scheduled to end with a wreath-laying ceremony on Heroes Square on November 4.

Fidesz will stage a rally at Astoria on the afternoon of October 23, from where participants will proceed to the House of Terror.

Fidesz national council president László Kövér said Gyurcsány is simply cowardly, cannot grasp the most elementary rules of democracy and has a personality disorder, as he dares to venture out into the street only amid security measures typical of a dictatorship. He recommends that if Gyurcsány gives a performance at the Opera, he should sing a song; then he will perfectly resemble Nero.
