Budapest transport company fines 300,000 ticket dodgers
Budapest's public transportation company BKV's Ticket inspectors have apprehended and fined 300,000 fare dodgers so far in 2008, BKV told MTI in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement noted that BKV's 423 inspectors have monitored some 10 million passengers - a number equal to the entire population of the country - and ascertained that 20 to 30 percent were using trams and buses without valid tickets.
Over the past five years the money in fines owed BKV but not paid has climbed to over 15 billion forints (64.5 million euros).
Freeloaders are expected to cost BKV about 11 billion forints (47m euros) in unpaid fares this year alone, the statement said, adding that the amount would be enough to buy 150 new buses.
