Budapest to increase parking fees to rescue BKV
The City of Budapest plans to help debt-ridden public transport operator BKV by raising parking fees and giving the extra income to the company, writes mr1-kossuth.hu, based on a report by Független Hírügynökség. The fees would be raised by roughly 10% at the beginning of next year. The details of the plan are currently being worked out.
In addition to raising the fees, the area of paid parking zones would be enlarged to further increase income. It is estimated that this would add an extra Ft 1 billion to Ft 1.5 billion (roughly €4 million to €6 million) to the BKV's budget.
The goal is for districts to contribute to the financing of the BKV, said Zoltán Gyarmati, managing director of Parking Kft, on television Tuesday morning. The districts would continue to receive the parking fees, and they would only have to hand over the extra income to the transport company.
