Budapest seeks EU funds for cycling scheme
The city of Budapest yesterday filed an application to the EU's Pro Regio office, seeking subsidies to establish a community cycling network in the city, making bicycles available to the public, following the examples of Vienna, Paris and Barcelona.
Under the proposal, a ride of less than 30 minutes will be free, and the following 30 minutes will cost the same as a bus ticket. However, fees will rise thereafter to encourage quick turnover of the bicycles. Plans call for 1,009 bicycles that could be returned at 73 bays in a 7km2 area.
Users of the bikes would have to register and pay an annual Ft 5,000.
