Budapest Police to compensate for illegal arrests
Budapest Police will pay out over Ft 19 million to 32 individuals (Ft 600,000 each) unlawfully detained during a demonstration staged in Gesztenyés kert in Budapest's 12th District on December 1, 2003.
Police dissolved the anti-government demonstration organised by the NGO Conscience '88, and detained several activists. The protesters were later acquitted in trials and 32 of them launched a compensation lawsuit. Former police chief Péter Gergényi refused to pay compensation, but this agreement was made during the tenure of incumbent Budapest Police chief Gábor Tóth.
