Budapest plans to install speed cameras along most dangerous roads
Budapest's municipal government would like to install fixed speed cameras along the most dangerous roads, including Váci út, Szentendrei út, Pesti út and Árpád út, to decrease the number of accidents caused by speeding, writes index.hu, based on a report by RTL Klub. The cameras would start operating on January 1, 2009, if the local government reaches an agreement with police and the National Traffic Authority.
The fixed cameras would be similar to those used on motorways and would operate 24 hours a day. These would be supplemented by 40 mobile cameras, which would be installed at varying locations. According to plans the cameras would be operated by the public area maintenance service, and no private companies would be involved. Employees of the service would forward digital photos directly to police.
Fines would go to the state treasury and would be shared between police and the local government, thus the system's operational costs would be covered by the fines it collects.
