Parking fees in Budapest will rise by an average 30 percent from Tuesday and zones affected by parking fees will be expanded.

The general assembly of Budapest unanimously voted for the changes on April 30.

Parking fees have been unchanged since 2001 and they have now been adjusted to the cost of public transport tickets. The Budapest Transport Company currently charges nearly 300 forints for a ticket.

Parking fees will rise from 430 forints to 580 forints per hour in the most expensive zone located in the Castle District.

There are five more parking zones in Budapest, where hourly fees will very between 435 forints and 145 forints from Tuesday on.

The general assembly also decided to build 2,000 new P and R (park and ride) places within the next two years.

Based on the example of Vienna, vehicles transporting goods within the city will be eligible for 20 minutes of free parking for loading and unloading.
