Budapest mayor calls for traffic congestion charge
"From the start of the next decade, drivers will only be able to drive into certain parts of Budapest after paying a congestion charge," Mayor Gábor Demszky announced at the European Mobility Week on Sunday.
Demszky said "those who drive within the administrative borders of Budapest will have to pay a fee," noting that this system has worked in a number of European cities, adding he sees "no other solution to ease the environmental damage caused by the ever-growing traffic."
On Saturday Andrássy út will be closed to traffic to draw attention to the advantages of an environmentally-conscious way of life.
