While the M0 motorway will soon be extended by 3.4 kilometers when a new 1,860 meter-long suspension bridge and associated roads are opened north of Budapest, the entire highway is only expected to be completed in the year 2020, reports leading daily Népszabadság.

The M0 - composed of various sections built over different periods of time - is seen by many as Hungary's most crucial motorway project, as it will allow for the re-routing of much traffic in and around Budapest.

The opening of Megyeri híd (Megyeri Bridge) will ease the traffic on the Árpád híd in north-central Budapest, diverting an estimated 30,000 cars daily, the latter will receive some extra traffic during the renovation of the Margit híd.

A smaller bridge related to the M0 project, crossing Szigetmonostor and Szentendre, will only be built much later.

The final steps of the M0 project involve building those sections which connect Route 10 and 12. Permission for the work will probably be granted by the first half of 2010, and the construction itself can start in the beginning of 2012. The last section of M0, linking Route 10 and the M1 motorway, will be complete by 2020.
