Budapest hospital turns down brain-damaged crash victims
The National Neurology Scientific Institute on Tuesday refused to provide medical treatment to two men who were transferred from Salgótarján hospital having suffered brain damage.
Under the new area order of transfer in force since April 1, the Salgótarján hospital now belongs to the Institute. Medical treatment was eventually provided to the pair at Miskolc after a delay of more than six hours.
The men were involved in a car crash near Pásztó, Nógrád county, and both the Miskolc and Salgótarján hospital managers claimed that they should have been given emergency assistance in Budapest, but the institute declined to treat them.
The Health Ministry responded that providing treatment is part of Miskolc Hospital's duty.
