Budapest homeless get vaccines

Homeless people in Budapest will receive vaccinations against hepatitis, pneumonia and flu before the end of January, reports hirszerzo.hu.

The Budapest Methodological Center of Social Policy (Budapesti Módszertani Szociális Központ; BMSZKI) is the largest organization in Hungary that deals with the homeless. So far this year, their vaccination campaign has inoculated over 500 homeless people in various vaccination stations across the capital.

The organization primarily targets homeless shelters, but they vaccinate anyone who shows up at the organization's medical office on Dózsa György út, says Dr. Szabolcs Zsigri, the coordinator of the project. As some of the vaccines will require a follow-up shot, the campaign will resume in May.

The vaccinations are especially important for the homeless, because, living on the periphery of society, they are completely excluded from social services. Their bodies are weak, and more prone to contracting and spreading diseases, Zsigri explained.
