Budapest eyes public bike rental system
The city of Budapest is planning to introduce a public bicycle rental system modelled on those in Vienna and Paris, the city's spokesman told MTI on Monday.
The mayor's cabinet decided to support to seek European Union funding for the project submitted by Deputy Mayor Miklos Hagyo, Krisztian Nyari said.
The system would put 800 to 1,200 bicycles available for the public at rental stations set up every 300 to 600 metres, first in downtown Budapest. The rental would be free in the first thirty minutes to one hour, and the rate would then rise in proportion to the time elapsed, Nyari said.
The project is estimated to cost 1.2 billion forints (EUR 4m), of which the city could provide 200 million.
The City Council will next month look at the project, which is planned to be introduced in mid-2010, or the spring of 2011, the latest, Nyari said.
