Budapest dogs receive microchips for easy identification
The Waif Dog Rescue Assocation (Lelenc Kutyamentő Egyesület) has announced that all dogs arriving at and leaving the Illatos út dog pound will be fitted with an identifying microchip starting this year, and the Hungarian Chamber of Veterinarians (Magyar Állatorvosi Kamara) has agreed to register the chips free of charge at www.petvetdata.hu.
According to sg.hu, the association launched a drive in December 2006 with the aim of raising money for 2,000 microchips. Only half of the money could be collected, but the Budapest Public Area Supervisor (Fővárosi Közterület Felügyelet) supplied the missing funds. The chips were provided by Bayer Hungária Kft. at a discount.
Dogs that had already been taken home cannot receive a chip through this program, but owners are encouraged to acquire one from another source, the dog rescue assocation said.
The association rescued 102 dogs last year. Further information on dogs currently waiting for reliable owners can be found at www.illatosut.hu.
