Budapest council mulls congestion charge

Budapest city council revised plans for a congestion charge in the city yesterday.

Advisors proposed numerous plans, which set out one or several zones, city spokesman Krisztián Nyáry said. The suggestions set the main boundary at Budapest’s outer boulevard (Róbert Károly körút).

The introduction of the charge would depend on the prior completion of metro 4, the extension of tramlines 1 and 3, and other tram projects. A new camera system would cost Ft 39 billion, but bring a return within a few years, according to estimates.

The proposal links the fee to the price of a single Budapest transport company ticket, although it would also depend on the emissions of each vehicle.
