A 12-year-old ethnic Hungarian from Romania stabbed a 16-year-old teenager on Blaha Lujza tér last Thursday in order to steal his MP3 player. The teenager was rushed to hospital with severe but not critical injuries.

The assailant was taken to the Eighth District police station then to a juvenile detention centre, from which he escaped on Friday. He was recaptured and taken back by Friday evening.

The boy, Krisztián, cannot read or write, and has never attended school. He cannot be punished due to his age, and his freedom can only be restricted with a special permit. The situation is further complicated by the fact that he is a Romanian national and his parents have left him in Hungary.
