Three petrol-fuelled explosive devices with timers attached were discovered in the boot of a passenger car underneath an overpass by Budapest's Western (Nyugati) Railway Station, a police spokesperson told MTI.

Eva Tafferner said local police had checked a car following a tip from the National Bureau of Investigation, and discovered the three explosive devices in its boot. A bomb squad is on the scene, she said. Police issued a press release saying they had arrested the driver of the car.

MTI's onsite correspondent reported that police have sealed the area around the railway station and are not allowing either vehicles or pedestrians near the spot. He reported seeing police surrounding a dark coloured Peugeot.

Hungarian railways MAV deputy spokesman Ferenc Both said police had sealed the main entrance to the railway station but it could be accessed using the underground and side entrances. Trains are arriving and departing on schedule, he added.
