Black Volkswagen ruled out in police HQ shooting
The gunmen who shot at Hungarian Police headquarters a week ago did not use the black Volkswagen Golf seen driving on Teve utca just before the shooting, said György Zsombok, assistant director of the National Investigation Office (NNI) on television this morning.
Zsombok added that while passengers of the car were earlier thought to be the perpetrators, their role in the incident has been clarified, and they are only being sought as witnesses. "They are potential eyewitnesses," he said.
When asked how they were ruled out of committing the crime, Zsombok said large number of witnesses had been questioned, and footage of surveillance cameras examined. He said that the images were clear enough to help determine in which direction the car was moving and where it stopped. The vehicle was also seen by police officers guarding the building. Zsombok said the reason the car has not been found yet is that a large number of cars need to be examined, because there is little available data to help identify it.
Zsombok confirmed that police will issue a drawing of a "suspicious passerby." He stressed that the image is a good likeness based on a reliable report from an eyewitness.
