Budapest's public transport operator BKV will raise fares and introduce new types of tickets and passes on January 1, index.hu reports.

Average fares will be hiked by 7.9%, which means a single ticket will cost Ft 290, a full-price monthly pass Ft 8,900, and a student/pensioner pass Ft 3,500, if the Budapest Assembly approves the plans at the end of this month.

Another important change will be the introduction of a 60-minute subway ticket, which will cost the same as a single ticket and will be valid for an unlimited number of stops and transfers - including return trips - within one hour.

Cyclists will be able to buy a bicycle pass for Ft 500 if they buy a monthly pass, which means they will not have to buy a ticket every time they want to transport their bicycle.

Nighttime tickets, which are currently more expensive than those valid during the day, will probably be abolished. Instead of these, regular tickets could be used in the future.

Day passes will be valid for 24 hours, family passes for 48 hours and tourist passes for 72 hours from the time of purchase, as opposed to the current practice which makes them valid from 0 to 24 hours on the specified days.

The price of day passes will be reduced by Ft 50 to Ft 1,500 to make them more attractive. Passengers who would ride at least six lines on a day will be able to save Ft 240 minimum by buying a day pass.

The price of yearly passes will be raised by only 4% ,to Ft 92,900 and to make them more attractive, they will consist of 12 paper coupons instead of just one. Experience showed that many passengers chose not to buy a year pass, because they were worried they would lose the valuable coupon.
