BKV chief's job at risk after tram line failure

BKV CEO Botond Aba may be fired, Magyar Hírlap surmises, as the problems plaguing the 4 and 6 tram line cables grew worse. The trams will not be running across Margaret Bridge before Tuesday after two pylons on the bridge fell on Saturday.

Mayor Gábor Demszky announced that independent engineers will investigate the repeated malfunctions along the Nagykörút tram lines, to ascertain whether negligence, poor construction work or external factors such as the summer heat are to blame.

Demszky also said Saturday that personal responsibility will be examined, including whether Aba ensured that the recent overhaul of the tram lines was adequately supervised.

The BKV supervisory board and the city council's maintenance and ownership committees will meet separately today to discuss the current problems.

Fidesz Budapest leader András Kupper said an investigation is overdue, adding that Demszky's responsibility should be examined. Fidesz says there is a crisis in Budapest thanks to 16 years of negligence by Demszky.
