Bicycle rental scheme to be introduced in Budapest
The green solution to traffic: EU subsidized bicycle rentals may be introduced throughout the city to ease congestion.
According to vg.hu, bicycle renting can be introduced in Budapest in a year from EU subsidies. Ádám Bodor, deputy of bicycle affairs in the Ministry of Traffic, Communication and Energy says that the only thing needed is a consensus between the city and the district. According to him, the cost of a single Combino would cover the bike renting system in the whole downtown.
According to János László, chairman of the Hungarian Bicycle Club (Magyar Kerékpáros Klub), international experiences indicate that these services are used by locals. The typical user reaches the city center by public transport then bypasses the heavy traffic jam on a bike. The services are available during working hours, and complement the public transport. In most cases, the first half hour is free, then the rental price increases with time so that people use the bikes for transportation rather than for recreation.
