Begging machines to replace beggars in Pécs
The Pécs local government is considering setting up machines to collect donations in public places in the hope that this will reduce the number of beggars bothering people, writes hirszerzo.hu.
Mayor Péter Tasnádi says the donations would be forwarded to those in need by organizations that know their problems. This method, used in several cities throughout Europe, may reduce begging if people are willing to donate.
The beggars themselves do not agree with this view, arguing that they can raise much more money themselves than the machines could give them. This year, more than 300 police cases have arisen as the result of aggressive panhandling but punishments are meaningless as beggars cannot pay the charges.
