Budapesters protest pub closing rule
A crowd of about 300 people converged outside the Sixth District town hall Monday afternoon to protest against the decree ordering local bars and restaurants to close at 10 p.m. or obtain a special permit.
The organisers delivered a petition with 15,000 signatures to local government officials, asking them to revoke the decree, in part because it causes financial damage to the district as well as to the businesses.
Deputy mayor Csaba Hatvani admitted that the council has not put the revocation of the decree on the agenda of its September 24 meeting.
Budapest city council will decide this week whether to challenge the decree at the Constitutional Court.
At the end of the protest coloured balloons displaying the names of restaurants and bars in the district were released into the air.
