August 20 fireworks may be canceled to benefit flood victims
Eszter Dóczi-Tóth, the owner of a restaurant in Budapest’s 12th District, has launched a Facebook group suggesting that “we should forego the August 20 fireworks display for the benefit of flood victims.”
Nearly 85,000 users of the social networking joined the group on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Dóczi-Tóth told Népszabadság that she has informed Public Administration and Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics of the initiative.
The cabinet will consider the move and will discuss the matter next week, government spokesman Anna Nagy told reporters. She said the sum involved is about Ft 100 million.
Socialist caucus leader Attila Mesterházy wrote on Facebook that he agrees with the initiative.
Politics Can Be Different (LMP) MP Bence Torai said several of his party’s politicians have joined the Facebook group.
