Archeological findings delay Budapest garage construction
An underground garage being built into the side of Buda's Castle Hill will not be completed until by summer 2009, instead of fall 2008 as originally planned, to allow remnants of the castle's walls dating back to the 15th century to be saved.
The reason for the long delay is that the old fortifications, about which archaeologists had known, are larger than expected. To make it possible to exhibit the findings, the planned garage will have to be redesigned and approved by the authorities.
The garage is being built by Raiffeisen Ingatlan Zrt., which won the rights to the project in a tender. In the first stage of the project, a garage with a capacity of 300 cars will be built, after which 400 more spaces will be added. After completion, the garage will be operated by WiPark Garagen AG of Austria.
The planned construction cost of Ft 2.5 billion (€9,8 million) will rise by roughly 10% as a result of the findings.
