Ancient ape fossil found in northeastern Hungary
The 10-millon year-old upper jawbone of an ancient primate, Anapithecus hernyaki, has been unearthed at Rudabánya, Borsod county. The fossil has six teeth on either side.
No find as significant as this regarding the early era of human evolution has been found at this site since 1971. Some 70-80 such fossils have been unearthed at Rudabánya, while only one has been discovered elsewhere in Europe to date.
The month-long excavation funded by National Geographic ends on Wednesday. There have been no state funds for this kind of project in Hungary since 1991.
