Analyst says Hungary PM "talks rather than governs"

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány pursues media policies and talks instead of governing, political scientist Péter Tölgyessy said in an interview with the life and literature weekly Élet és Irodalom, out today.

Tölgyessy asserted that the prime minister hopes to regain his popularity from EU-funded development projects, rather than from the success of reforms but "this is the grand style of fund allocation, opening EU funds in the good old Hungarian way."

One-time Fidesz MP Tölgyessy had some harsh words for Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán who "in line with one of the worst domestic political traditions, only speaks, but thinks and acts little." He said Orbán could create yet another election debacle for Fidesz and mobilise the entire left-wing camp to vote against the centre-right party.

Tölgyessy concluded that Gyurcsány has lost his credibility to such an extent that the Socialist Party stands very little chance of winning an election with him, although a change of leader would be a premature move.
