Air quality in Hungary at unhealthy level

Due to calm weather, air pollution is reaching or above the maximum permitted levels not just in Budapest but everywhere in Hungary, writes inforadio.hu. This condition is dangerous especially to children, elderly people and patients of respiratory, heart and circulatory illnesses, said Zsuzsanna Bibók, assistant department head of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Water Management.

In Budapest's inner districts, dust pollution exceeds the healthy level by 50%, and at some locations, the amount of nitrogen in the air is also above the permitted level. According to Bibók, the two main sources of pollution is motorized traffic and heating. If the weather turned windy, the situation would improve, but this is not expected until next week.

Bibók recommended not using cars in foggy weather unless absolutely necessary to avoid air pollution staying above healthy levels for a longer period.
