Over six percent of Hungary's population has been inoculated against the H1N1 new flu and the rate could reach 40 percent by the end of the year, Health Minister Tamas Szekely told a conference on Thursday.

Hungary is well prepared for the new flu with its inoculation plan, which is further ahead with provision than many other EU states, Zsuzsanna Jakab, the Hungarian director of the Stockholm-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), told the international conference.

Head of the Hungarian Office of WHO Zsofia Pusztai urged parents to allow their children to be given the shot, for their maximum safety. Jakab welcomed the Hungarian government's decision to provide the anti-new flu shot to 14-18 year-olds free of charge.

The new H1N1 flu virus has been verified in 319 cases in Hungary and five people have died after testing positive for the virus.
