One-year Hungarian highway stickers expired at midnight on January 31, the State Motorway Management (ÁAK) has informed the public. Yearly highway stickers are valid for 13 months, until January 31 of the following year to provide motorists with enough time to purchase the new stickers. The ÁAK also reminded car owners that the ministry of transport has phased out paper-based stickers.

According to autoblog.hu, the new e-sticker system allows motorists to purchase motorway passes in the same ways as in the past, at ÁAK customer service offices and other vending locations such as gas stations, via SMS, by phone and online. Customers receive a receipt or a confirmation message after making the purchase, which has to be kept until one year after the validity of the e-sticker expires. Cameras along highways and hand-held devices will be used to monitor license plates to check whether the fees have beenpaid.

Prices have not gone up compared to last year, and in the D4 category, the price was even lowered by Ft 21,000. This year, the D1 yearly sticker costs Ft 37,200, the D2 fee is Ft 106,500, the D3 charge is Ft 159,000 and the D4 rate is Ft 198,000. These stickers will be valid until midnight on January 31, 2009.
