15th-century Hungarian bishop to be reburied
Humanist poet and former bishop of Pécs Janus Pannonius (1434-1472) will be reburied in the city's cathedral in the fall, writes hetek.hu, based on various media reports.
The probable remains of Janus Pannonius were discovered in the lower church of the cathedral in 1991. According to archaeologist Gábor Kárpáti, historical records, the location of the grave and the artifacts found in it all indicate that the grave found 17 years ago really belonged to the former bishop and poet.
The skeleton thought to belong to Janus Pannonius is kept at the county museum, but Bishop Mihály Mayer would like to have it reburied during the festivities held for the 1,000th anniversary of the church county this fall.
The ceremony will be held on October 22, local daily Új Dunántúli Napló reported.
